Virgo B. Good (and kind!)

File:Sépulcre Arc-en-Barrois 111008 12.jpgThe eye of a critic does two things: perceive what is lacking, and compare one thing to another. This ability to cast a detailed glance at at the world and know what needs to be adjusted can be a gift of the master who discerns what yet is needed for a work to be completed, or the judgement of one for whom the world has become heavy. As Mercury and the Sun move through Virgo and form their various aspects with other planets, we will have more activity and options to choose how we will see and present ourselves in the world.

Looking into the often raw and terrifying realm of our own woundedness isn’t necessarily anyone’s favorite activity, yet the desire to look into herself and perfect what she sees is the mandate of Virgo. Mercury opposes Chiron in Pisces on Thursday, the 29th. We’ve been feeling this upcoming opposition as urges to communicate our feelings, criticisms, and results of self-introspection have brought issues of emotional self-responsibility (or lack thereof) to the forefront. As Mercury in Virgo longs to express the detailed statistical results of its analysis, Chiron says, gently, Yes, I hear you. And, have you suffered enough yet? Take your imperfect and humble self, and allow the cool water of compassion to flow over your raw and burning wounds. Feel, rather than think, and allow yourself to be.

The Sun in Virgo exactly sextiles Saturn in Scorpio on Thursday too, giving an opportunity for a good dose of Virgo’s level headed analysis to affect the often less than smooth sailing of Saturn’s ride

through the seas of the underworld. Where we can practically and with intelligence look at our internal temple and see the need for improvement (coupled with the compassion of Pisces), we can make great strides in our efforts to heal emotional wounds and work with our fears of intimacy and relating.

What does this actually look like? I’ve been experiencing my own inner critic a lot, especially in the context of intimate relationship. I’ve found myself engaging in a self-sabotaging routine of giving my friend 50 ways of jumping our newly launched ship, cleverly disguised as intelligent communication about my needs and areas of self-work . Why? Ah–here it is, my fears of actually being liked, actually being seen. Saturn in Scorpio: fears of betrayal, of losing my power, of getting to close. Now that I’ve seen what I’m really doing, I can take a more compassionate look at those fears and ask myself, is this how I want to be expressing who I am to this person, to myself, to the world?

As the week progresses there will also be possibilities to benefit from Mercury’s passage through it’s own sign of Virgo. Our minds will be intelligent and quick, and our ability to discern what needs to be done to create more physical and emotional health and well-being will positively impact our beliefs about what it takes to be emotionally secure and self-reliant. Meanwhile Mars in the first degrees of Leo wants to play, express creatively and roar from the rooftops. This is still an excellent time to act on inspirations from Uranus in Aries and take action on ideas to express ourselves more clearly and fully.

File:New Moon at sunset.jpgA New Moon in Virgo finishes up the week on September 5th, giving us fresh and fertile soul to start new healthful routines of relating to ourselves, our bodies, and others. What do we want to harvest from the summer months, as August wanes and we enter the mellower season of Fall? As the Moon wanes this week, allow the chaff of what isn’t needed to fall away, so that by New Moon time you are clear about what seeds to include in the next season of growth for September’s lunar cycle.

Have ease with yourself, and the softness of compassion as you work with Virgo’s improving energies.

The Nature of Seeing

What does it mean to see? To really allow our vision to penetrate and comprehend another being, or a landscape, or our fellow creatures? I am reminded of the movie Avatar, where the female character has interactions with the other creatures on her planet where she sees the true essence of those creatures, even if she’s in some kind of challenging interaction with them. As the Sun finishes up its journey in Leo this week, and as Venus has moved into Libra, I’m curious about this idea of really seeing and being seen.

Actually I find that most people have a love/hate relationship with being visible. I myself do, and it is my continual journey to understand the strong Leo/5th house energy in my chart. On the one had, we all long to be really understood and accepted for who we really are; yet our ability to express all of ourselves is typically quite cut off and short circuited by our fears of being rejected and misperceived.  The highest vibration of Leo invites us to deeply express all of our light, however that looks. To radiate from our own core of self-knowing and truth, and by doing so, encourage others to do the same. The trick is to live and express from a place of true essence, rather than ego–where shadow Leo can demand all the attention and/or requires constant feedback from the world in order to validate itself.

Enter the archetype of Virgo, where the Sun moves to on the 22nd, and Mercury follows on the 23rd. This archetype, when working with essence and exalted Leo energies, takes all of our soul gifts and creative potential out into the world to be of service. She says, hey, this loveliness inside of me needs to be shared! What are the best ways to do that? And using her discernment and ability to perceive and perfect with laser-like clarity, finds ways for our souls to interact with the world with both joy and humility.

When Virgo encounters shadow Leo–the narcissist, the egoist, the bully–she takes her amazing sword of insight and cuts away with that same precision. There is no room in Virgo’s temple of highest good for the bombast of a Lion who is not expressing it’s true light. Or her own shadow can be activated, creating criticism, judgment, and a self-abnegating predilection for suffering or victimhood. And that true self, that longs to be seen, is hidden behind the defenses of perfectionism, control, and rigidity.

As the Sun and Mercury–our essence and how we communicate that–begin the journey into Virgo, we have the opportunity to see what aspect of this wise and humble archetype we are choosing to activate. As Venus travels her own sign of Libra, we will naturally be looking at our relationships and searching for balance and equanimity; Mars enters Leo on the 27th, keeping the energies of the Lion alive and infusing our lives with the desire to actively express who we are.

Virgo is the bridge between the self of Leo and the other of Libra.cropped-clifford-suspension-bridge-ii-2008.jpg Can we cultivate a compassionate and discerning witness consciousness to observe how we are choosing to manifest our essence and allowing ourselves to be seen? Can we look at our beloveds, co-workers, friends, and see them, attempting to do the same thing? Where can we help each other? Where can we allow more room for ourselves, take a chance on shedding the masks and needs for validation and just shine in our own particular jaw-dropping beauty?

I want to see you. I want you to see me.

I Think, Therefore I Evolve?

A friend of mine shared a link on Facebook, a quote from Jeff Brown: Excessive Analysis Leads to Emotional Paralysis

I have interesting feelings of my own about this idea, because I believe it and yet also deeply believe in the capacity of the mind to affect healing. I feel (and think!) that developing a witness consciousness and an ability to perceive one’s own mind is invaluable in healing.

In any case this isn’t a plug for or against Brown, who is making his contribution to the spiritual consciousness of the world just as I and many others are trying to do. What came up for me is the function of the mind in the processing of our unhealed, disowned, and unrecognized emotions/emotional blocks.

To analyze, process, and perfect are the actions of Virgo. The Moon and Venus are conjunct in this sign today, August 9. There will be a natural tendency to use the mind and it’s incredible powers of analysis in the Venusian realms of love, self-love, relating and working with our own talents and resources.

Am I good enough? Do I make enough money? Am I wasting my potential? Does that person deserve me? Do I deserve them? Why am I alone? Why am I lonely? How can I be more perfect so that I can have more money, love, etc. Why? Why? Why?

These are the kinds of questions that can arise in our minds during the passage of the moon through Virgo and connection with Venus, or if we have the Virgo archetype emphasized in our charts. The Mercury ruled Earth sign of Virgo can be relentless in its busyness and thinking. I agree with Jeff that we cannot merely think our way into healing and awareness. And yet, without the cultivation of a witness aspect of our consciousness–the ability to watch ourselves and our emotions–we cannot discern (great Virgo word) what is happening within us to feel.

Shadow Virgo is hypercritical and operating a thinking journey; enlightened Virgo realizes what the mind is telling itself and performs whatever actions necessary to remove limiting beliefs from the body temple.

Another aspect of the Moon-Venus conjunction is to tap both these planets’ ability to generate love and nurturing. Neptune, in Virgo’s polarity of Pisces, also offers a solution of compassion, and a surrendering of our thoughts to the Divine heart. Thoughts do drive feelings and it is important to recognize and watch them. Then to release the mind and enter the heart, this, I believe, is one way of evolving into more complete aspects of our selves.

Many times we do not know why we feel as we do; it is important then to just feel the feelings! Many times we analyze and pick apart events and relationships way beyond the point that is useful. As ever, there is a balance to be gained with body, heart, and mind . . . the planets in Leo right now are asking us to open up our heart centers, the water planets are asking us to feel, and the earth planets are inviting us to take ALL that awareness and ground it into our everyday lives.

Thinking, Feeling, Doing: it all helps us to evolve and connect more deeply to ourselves and therefore the world. I thank my friend and Jeff Brown for stimulating the thoughts and feelings that guided the post this week!
