January is one of my favorite months–the new beginnings, deep silent winter (especially now that I live where it snows!), and the wonderful grounded energy of Capricorn to get things off to a thought-out, structured start. It’s also my birth month, and after many years of not identifying with my Capricorn Sun (which is what brought me to my study of astrology) I welcome the integrous, inward looking and focused energy of the archetype of the sea goat. The month has sped by, and it’s been a curiously emotional month as well, not a state of being normally associated with the goat.
Many of us have been feeling the potential of the new year. Planetary activity in the Cardinal signs has got everyone a bit amped up, ready to make some change and see some progress. And, this year has started out with some significant retrogrades (Venus & Jupiter) that tend to slow down outer action in favor of inner growth and preparation.
Where have you been feeling the retrograde thoughtfulness?
Jupiter is currently at 12 degrees of Cancer and will continue retrograde motion until March 6. This examination of deeply held, unexpressed or unintegrated feelings has been in opposition to Venus and Pluto traveling in Capricorn, and created a dynamic working of the Capricorn/Cancer polarity for all of us–leading to an emotionalized December and January. The balance here is to take time to sit deeply and simply with our feelings, fears, and tender places, while the outer world urges us to keep moving and doing. Rest and reflection are important, as is the continued movement toward our goals. Capricorn asks that we reflect on our feeling states and take responsibility for them. The sea-goat understands the watery realm–he’s got the tail of a fish after all–yet knows that drowning perpetually in a victim state gets one nowhere. Embracing our emotions, owning them, expressing them in healthy ways and then moving into some action to keep energy flowing, this is part of the Cancer/Capricorn polarity.
Now Venus herself is about to turn direct (at 13 degrees of Capricorn on Jan. 31), as she has been examining her relationship to personal authority, abilities, goals, and life structures. Her inward glance has been asking us to look at where we may fall into shadow Capricorn–fear, control issues, depression, emotional coldness, lack of integrity and self trust–and what we can do to love (she’s Venus after all!) the disowned parts of ourselves. If we have been utilizing her energies with efficiency (Capricorn!) and an eye to a more auspicious future, as she stations and turns direct we can take our new insights and plan our journey up the exciting mountain of our choice. If we have perhaps been paralyzed and unwilling to take a look within, we may find ourselves lost in an expanded state of victimhood, lack of emotional clarity, or a sense of personal alienation.
Venus moving forward can initiate movement toward our highest goals, grounded in practical wisdom and fair use of our personal talents. Our relationships that are conducted in integrity serve our growth, and we do things we never thought we were capable of. As inner feelings bloom up and are respectfully felt and integrated, Jupiter in Cancer expands a sense of personal emotional well-being and inner safety. Pluto’s opposition to Jupiter and conjunction to Venus from his place at 12 degrees of Capricorn demands that we proceed with courage, integrity, and a relentless sense of purpose. Resistance of our soul’s evolution pretty much leads to disheartening sense of overwhelm, so it is best to ride the waves that come to the best of our ability. A few lines from Rumi always inspire me in this regard:
This being human is a guest house. /Every day a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness, /Some momentary awareness comes /As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, /Who violently sweep your house
Empty of its furniture, /Still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out /For some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
Meet them at the door laughing, /And invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes, /Because each has been sent
As a guide from beyond.
Helping us with some emotional objectivity is the New Moon in Aquarius tomorrow, Thursday, at almost 11 degrees. Aquarius enjoys looking at things from a wide perspective, with an eye to the future and personal freedom. Friday, when Venus stations, is also the Chinese New Year of the Horse, a dynamic and spirited energy that will imbue all of 2014. The weekend could feel like a time to break on through to the other side, to gallop away into a place of new freedom. But remember your Capricorn prudence and self-responsibility. Pisces energy from Mercury, Neptune and asteroids Chiron and Juno could cause some communication/relational fogginess, and now is not the time to be throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
February will still be an introspective time. Upcoming retrogrades may slow outer progress–but we are not to despair! Instead may we celebrate the weeks of rich inner living ahead.
